The 2007 book, Lusitania: An Illustrated Biography of the Ship of Splendor (2007, Lulu ISBN-10 1430319623, ISBN-13 978-1430319627) has been retired in favor of the all-new volume, Lusitania: An Illustrated Biography (2010 Amberley, ISBN-10 1848688342, ISBN-13 978-1848688346). Although the titles are similar, the new book is from a prestigious publisher in the United Kingdom, Amberley Books. As it is produced by a major publisher, and not self-published like the 2007 volume, the new 2010 book is vastly superior in quality and content from its predecessor. If you are looking for the new book, please be careful not to purchase the publication from 2007, published by Lulu Books, or with the 2007 version's ISBN numbers. If the cover shows the color starboard profile of the liner at rest, (as seen below) it is the old book. The new book's cover features the full-color artwork of Tom Lear.

2007 Version Information:

Prepare to take a journey back in time… step aboard the decks of one of the world’s largest, fastest, and most beloved ocean liners, and experience the Lusitania in all her splendor...

It has been called 'masterful,' 'a must read,' 'the first first-rate Lusitania book,' and a real 'breath of fresh air.' Now discover for yourself why this book stands out from other books about this legendary Cunard liner...

Corrections to Lusitania: An Illustrated Biography of the Ship of Splendor

Although this book has been removed from circulation and completely replaced with the 2010 volume, it should be noted that a few errors crept into the text of the older publication. In an ongoing attempt to make the most accurate information on the Lusitania available, updates to that volume will be posted here as needed.

  1. Page 6, paragraph 3. -- "The first keel plate of the Lusitania was laid on June 16, 1904..." The correct date for this event is August 17, 1904.
  2. Page 47, paragraph 3. -- The gratings that covered the decking of the Bridge wings were made from wood.
  3. Page 103, paragraph 2. -- The time for the Lusitania's record east-bound Crossing No. 2 is incorrectly given as 5 days, 4 hours and 19 minutes. This was a transcription error held over from her first east-bound crossing. Her second east-bound crossing time was, in reality, 4 days, 22 hours and 53 minutes. All other information contained in this paragraph is correct.
  4. Page 191, paragraph 2. "... He [Schwieger] had first spotted her [the Lusitania] at 1:20 p.m..." According to Schwieger's war diary, he first spotted the Lusitania at 1:00 p.m. GMT (2:00 p.m. as recorded in the log, which was maintained 1 hour ahead of GMT)
  5. Page 207,The caption for the photograph of the Lusitania lifeboat is incorrect. It should read:
"In remembrance of the May 7, 1915 disaster, one of the Lusitania's collapsibles was placed on the jetty at Broadstairs in England. This photograph was taken in 1925."
  6. "Appendix 2: Masters of the Lusitania", page 225. -- In the course of ongoing research, I came across a reference to a change in command of the Lusitania that was previously unknown. Previous evidence led me to conclude that Captain Dow commanded the ship from November 22, 1913 straight through to March 6, 1915 (Coyages 82-99). However, for a single round-trip voyage (No. 88, Crossings Nos. 175 West and 176 East), William Turner was in command of the liner, taking over for Dow.
    .Manifest
Above: This passenger manifest shows Captain Turner's signature at the end of Crossing No. 175 West.
Dow resumed his command of the ship on Crossing 177 West, and retained command until March of 1915, as previously documented. This correction will be included in the hardcover versions of Lusitania: An Illustrated Biography when they are released, and will later be included in the softcover version copies.
